You may know a few things about tungsten bands. Undoubtedly, you have heard that tungsten carbide rings have become the metal of choice for grooms throughout the nation. One of the main reasons this is so is due to its toughness. They resist scratching much better than any other metal out there. Few substances can scratch it. Diamonds are one of them. What some may find odd or shocking is that tungsten rings are not indestructible. Tungsten carbide rings can break! If a tungsten ring is dropped on a hard surface, it can break or crack.

While it is completely true that tungsten rings are made from the most scratch resistant metal on the planet and that tungsten carbide bands are made from the hardest metal known to man, it is also true that tungsten wedding rings cannot withstand any kind of shock or pressure. Reputable tungsten jewelers will never make promises of tungsten’s indestructability. The facts of the matter are that the harder a material becomes, the more brittle it becomes. For example, diamonds are the hardest material on Earth, even harder than tungsten carbide. The only substance on Earth that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. However, if you take your trusted hammer and strike a diamond, it will easily chip or crack. It is not indestructible and neither is Tungsten carbide.

Gold on the other hand is known as a “softer metal”. While gold can scratch fairly easily, it will most likely just bend if struck with force, not shatter, like tungsten. Gold is a more traditional ring (and more expensive), but it does have its drawbacks in terms of how it can scratch easily and can be bent easily as well.

If you choose to go the tungsten route, you may now have fears about it breaking on you. What can you do to protect yourself from this? Well, first things first, make sure you purchase your ring from a reputable tungsten ring jeweler. Most of these reputable jewelers will offer a lifetime warranty, which covers your ring against damage at not cost. However, be careful. Many retailers will offer this warranty coverage with a cost to you if you do need to replace your ring. Be sure to make sure your tungsten retailer will give you a new ring at no cost to you.
