You have purchased rings in the past perhaps and figure you know your ring size. Many people assume that a ring size is the same no matter where you purchase them. While this true to the extent that you will most likely be the size you think you are, you will be surprised to find that ring sizes do vary.

Manufacturers make every attempt to make their ring sizes abide by standard measurements, usually by diameter. However, there are often slight variances from manufacturer to manufacturer. This does not mean that a ring that varies has poor craftsmanship. Think of shoes and clothing. Sometimes your shoes can feels looser or snugger depending on the manufacturer of your shoe. A medium sized shirt may feel tight with one brand of clothing and just fine in another. This doesn’t mean you have gained or lost weight, just that there is a slight difference in the manufacturer. This slight difference is important to keep in mind, especially if you want to engrave your ring. It is better to try it on before you decide to engrave to make sure that it fits properly. Keep in mind, some manufacturers will not take your ring back if you have had it engraved.

Tungsten rings tend to have a slightly different size when compared to what you may have been sized at your local jeweler. The reason for this is that tungsten carbide rings are comfort fit, which means that they are rounded on the inside instead of being flat. This process is designed to allow your finger to slide in and out more easily, hence the term “comfort fit”. Because the inside of the ring is rounded, this makes the ring fit looser.

If you were to go to a jewelry store, they tend to have standard fit finger sizers because they sell gold and platinum rings, which are usually not made comfort fit. This is why it is good to have your tungsten ring sized by a tungsten jeweler before engraving, to insure that your ring is the right fit.
